THOSE
OLD TIME HYMNS
A lot of people like to sing the
modern, new praise songs,
With drums and clashing cymbals
to a loud and lively beat.
Sometimes few oft-repeated words
are sung, then sung again,
And countless repetitions echo
ere the song's complete.
But somehow they don't touch my
heart, or bring me quite the joy
That I've received throughout my
life in times of grief or loss,
By singing from an old time
hymnal songs of faith and hope,
And songs about my Savior dying
on a rugged cross.
So many old time hymns are
hidden deep within my heart,
To bring me hope and comfort in
the darkness of the night,
When storms rage all about me
and my body lies in pain
Upon my tear-soaked pillow - not
a gleam of hope in sight.
Those Scripture truths in music
that lie etched within my heart
Remind me that my loving Lord
was punished in my place,
So all my sins could be erased
and cleansed from my account,
And be replaced with endless
love while I behold His face.
I've found a friend in Jesus,
and He's mine forevermore.
He is my mighty fortress as the
billows toss and roll.
And so I praise His mighty Name
that I am not alone,
But have His full assurance all
is well within my soul.
I find that every day is sweeter
than the day before,
For Jesus keeps me singing as I
go along my way.
And as those precious old time
hymns bring peace into my heart,
I leave my burdens with the Lord
as I kneel down and pray.
I have so many blessings - far
too numerous to count,
And so I praise my blessed Lord
for all that He has done.
But I'm especially thankful for
the songs within my heart,
That bring me sweet communion
with God's own begotten Son.
